Cylinder Stoves vs. Summit Stoves

October 25th, 2007 by Devin Lewis

I don’t know how many of you are familiar with Cylinder Stoves, but they make a pretty darn good camp stove.

Also, I don’t know how many of you are familiar with Davis Tent, but they make a pretty darn good wall tent.

Now, Davis Tent used to be a proud dealer of Cylinder Stoves stoves, but now they offer a new line of wood camp stoves, the Summit Stoves.  Now you may be saying, “well wait a second, the new stoves from Davis Tent look exactly like the stoves from Cylinder Stoves”. And you know what, you would be right. So what’s going on then?

Well… long story short, Davis Tent took the concept, design, and idea of the stoves made by Cylinder Stoves, and now has some company out of China reproduce the stoves for them.  Why would they do this? Well, profit I would assume.  They can now get their stoves at a much lower price than they were getting before, which enables them to sell their Summit Stoves at a much lower price than the stoves from Cylinder Stoves.

I have seen and used both a Cylinder Stove and a Summit Stove, and to some they might look the same, but I assure you, they are two very different animals. The quality of welds, material, and workmanship of the Summit Stoves is far lower than that of the Cylinder Stoves.

So when looking for an outdoor wood burning camp stove, which one do you choose? Well, if price is a major issue for you and you’re not too concerned about quality, then go for the Summit Stoves.  But if you want the original product, backed by excellent workmanship, then go with the Cylinder Stoves. Either way, the choice is yours to make, just know what your getting before you make that kind of investment.
