When choosing a wood burning camp stove, there are several factors that come into play. One of the most important factors is size and weight. Most people pack their wood stove into camp, so obviously you would want a stove that was both durable and yet easy to transport.

There are three main types of wood camp stoves. You’ve got your heavy duty stoves, lightweight stoves, and collapsible stoves. Which stove is right for you depends greatly upon your situation and what you will be using the stove for.

If you are concerned about space, then you ought to consider a collapsible stove. These stoves are smaller, so they don’t put out as much heat as the larger stoves, but they can break down and fit into small spaces, they are also very light in weight. Sims Stoves offers several different types of collapsible stoves, and Kni-Co Mfg. also produces one collapsible stove.

If weight is a concern but space is not, they perhaps a normal lightweight camp stove would work for you. These stoves vary in size, from really small to very large. These stoves are easy to pack but they do have some downfalls. Being built out of thinner material, these stoves will not last as long as a heavy stove will. You might find yourself replacing these stoves every couple years if you do not take good care of them. The main producers of these lightweight stoves are Riley Stoves and Kni-Co Mfg.

And then there are the heavy duty stoves. As of right now, the two leaders in heavy stoves are Cylinder Stoves and Kwik Kamp Stoves. This type of stove is heavier and often times larger than your collapsible and lightweight stoves, but they are much more durable and will last must longer. Also, the larger models of these stoves will hold a fire overnight, and are capable of burning extremely hot.

Overall, I personally prefer the heavier stoves. They last much longer, they are durable and can handle the conditions of packing in and base camp, and all of the features and advantages that they offer are well worth the extra weight and size. No matter what type or size of stove you have, just make sure and take good care of it, treat it well, and you should be able to get many good years or service from your stove.

I just finished a couple more product set-up articles for the website. The two new ones that I thought were worth mentioning are the two articles on how to set up a wall tent. There are two different articles for this because there are two different types of tent frames that people use.

The two main types of frames used with wall tents are the internal frame and the A-frame. They both get their name from their design. The internal frame is a frame that is entirely internal, there are no frame pieces on the outside of the tent. The A-frame is a frame that has end pieces that look somewhat like the letter A. You can view a picture of an internal frame by clicking here, and you can view a picture of an A-frame by clicking here.

Anyway, you can learn how to set up a wall tent with internal frame or set up a wall tent with an A-frame by checking out the articles. If there are any suggestions out there on how to improve the set-up guides then go ahead and post a comment to let me know.

So I got to thinking about it, and I realized that I have never gone on an overnight hunting trip without having a wall tent or wood camp stove with me. There have been times when I’ve just had a small wall tent without a stove. And also times when I’ve maybe used a range tent or spike tent as well as a little tent stove to keep warm. But never been without, and I know why… because a hunting trip is so much more enjoyable when your comfortable.

For example, this past October I came up empty in the rifle deer hunt, but that didn’t stop me from having a great time. Each night after returning to camp, there was a warm, glowing canvas wall tent there to greet me. Last years elk steak was soon cooking atop of our Hunter Stove, and there I was laying on my cot savoring the smell and enjoying the warmth and comfort. Ya, hunting aint so bad when you’ve got that to look forward to every night.

So me and a few buddies of mine decided to go on a hike/camping trip a couple weekends ago. There was only three of us total, and we had just decided to get away for one night and hit the hills. So we packed up all we could carry on our backs and headed out.

There are some great hills about ten miles west of where we live, so thats where headed to. Now since this was just a one nighter, we didn’t bother packing a tent or stove. We figured we would be fine in just our sleeping bags. So all we really carried were the essentials; sleeping bag, water, food, and your common camping tools.

Well, to make a long story short, by the time we had reached the peak it was just about dark and so we decided to have a quick meal and then hit the sack for the night. Just about the time we were bedding down, we noticed it beginning to snow ever so lightly. At first we brushed it off, thinking it would let up soon enough. Well, it didn’t. Keep in mind that we had no tent, no stove, no protection.

So for the next half hour we were scrambling in the snow, looking for any sort of shelter. We finally were able to find a small cave, and that was all it took. Ten minutes later there were three guys (each in their own sleeping bag, of course) huddled in a small cave trying to catch some sleep. Ah, I love camping.

Now I know that this really doesn’t have much to do with Outfitter Warehouse or any camping related topics, but I decided to post it anyway.

I will soon be launching a new network of websites in addition to the few that I already have up. This new network isn’t directly related to camping or hunting, but it still has to do with the great outdoors. Anyway, the network “hub” will be located at www.motoshuffle.com. This website will initially serve as the central location as well as house the network blog.

As of now, there will be four different branches of the network in addition to the hub. They can be found at www.atvshuffle.com, www.dirtbikeshuffle.com, www.snowmobileshuffle.com, and www.pwcshuffle.com. I might decide to add a few more sites as time goes on but as for now this will be it.

So what is the purpose or mission of this new network? Well, each of these sites will be specialized online classifieds websites. With ATVs for sale, used dirt bikes, snowmobiles for sale, and used personal watercrafts. I initially plan to offer listings for free until i can build a large enough user group to monetize the system.

Anyway, you could jump over and check out the sites but there is just a plain index page posted for now, I plan on updating them soon.

Montana Canvas, Reliable Tent & Tipi, Cylinder Stoves, Davis Tent, Canvas Cabins, Bravo Mfg., Kwik Kamp, and Idaho Canvas.

Now not all wall tents are created equal, and the features that each tent offers can vary quite a bit. For this reason, I have compiled a list of every wall tent feature I could think of. They are listed below in no particular order.

Windows, sod cloth, adjustable ridge sock, reinforced corners, reinforced ridge, heavy duty zipper, 2nd door in back wall, heavy duty grommets, stove jack, storage pocket, D-rings and web loops, sewn in screen door, sewn in floor, canvas type, sidewall height, and size.

With so many different features and options available, make sure you know what your getting in a tent before you purchase.

I don’t know how many of you are familiar with Cylinder Stoves, but they make a pretty darn good camp stove.

Also, I don’t know how many of you are familiar with Davis Tent, but they make a pretty darn good wall tent.

Now, Davis Tent used to be a proud dealer of Cylinder Stoves stoves, but now they offer a new line of wood camp stoves, the Summit Stoves. Now you may be saying, “well wait a second, the new stoves from Davis Tent look exactly like the stoves from Cylinder Stoves”. And you know what, you would be right. So what’s going on then?

Well… long story short, Davis Tent took the concept, design, and idea of the stoves made by Cylinder Stoves, and now has some company out of China reproduce the stoves for them. Why would they do this? Well, profit I would assume. They can now get their stoves at a much lower price than they were getting before, which enables them to sell their Summit Stoves at a much lower price than the stoves from Cylinder Stoves.

I have seen and used both a Cylinder Stove and a Summit Stove, and to some they might look the same, but I assure you, they are two very different animals. The quality of welds, material, and workmanship of the Summit Stoves is far lower than that of the Cylinder Stoves.

So when looking for an outdoor wood burning camp stove, which one do you choose? Well, if price is a major issue for you and you’re not too concerned about quality, then go for the Summit Stoves. But if you want the original product, backed by excellent workmanship, then go with the Cylinder Stoves. Either way, the choice is yours to make, just know what your getting before you make that kind of investment.

I just returned late last night from my annual deer hunting trip here in Southern Utah. Each year, I go hunting with my dad and a few of my brothers in the Pine Valley Mountains, which are located in the southwestern corner of Utah. Unfortunately, I came away empty handed this year despite having great weather and a few opportunities at bucks.

But aside from the hunting woes, it was a great weekend where i was just able to relax and enjoy the outdoors. I was able to take a few quick pictures of camp while i was up there, I will post them below.

We set up a 15′x21′ canvas wall tent for camp, which was great but maybe just a tad bit too small for the seven people we had in camp. Overall, it worked great, despite having to retrofit a 15′ A-Frame to a 21′ Tent. We had to do this because in previous years, we would use a 15′x15′ wall tent, and have just left the tent frame up in the mountains stashed in a tree. So this year we decided to bring a larger tent but forgot to bring more frame pieces. Oh and by the way, the wall tent and tent frame were both manufactured by Cylinder Stoves.

We also were using a stove from Cylinder Stoves. The size shown is the Hunter Model, which worked fine but was maybe just a tad bit too small for a 15′x21′ wall tent. It looks old and worn because it is, we also leave the stove up in the mountain in our stash which saves us from having to pack it in each year. And as you can see, camp was quite messy when this photo was taken.

Overall, it was a great trip despite only bagging one deer between all of us. Sometimes its just nice to get out and and away from life and enjoy the time alone.
